Not everyone “goes away” to college. Instead of getting a dorm room on campus, many students keep their bedroom at home; they commute to school.
There are several reasons a student might decide to commute to a college near home. Some do it to save money on room and board. Others do it to stay close to family and friends.
While it is possible to have a great college experience as a commuter, students who do it say it takes a little extra work. A recent article on U.S. News & World Report offers the following five tips for college student commuters:
- Get involved with a club or organization.
- Set expectations at home.
- Seek out resources for commuters.
- Get a mentor.
- Push yourself out of your comfort zone.
