Like many public institutions, Santa Monica College has seen its state funding plummet in recent years.
Unlike other community colleges, it has a controversial plan to increase its cash flow.
Starting this summer, SMC intends to significantly increase tuition for its most sought-after courses. Such courses would cost about $600 each—a signficant jump from the current pice of $108 a course.
SMC’s selective tuition increase is believed to be the first of its kind in the U.S. The college’s reps say it’s the only way the school can meet the demand for its courses. Currently, 230,000 students are “locked out” of SMC due to insufficient offerings.
