From school websites to great resources like PrincetonReview.com, so much of the college search can be conducted online.
However, Sara Zessar at Montgomery Educational Consulting reminds that you cannot beat face-to-face conversations for gathering information about the schools on your list.
Conversations with current undergrads can be especially helpful as students are likely to provide the unvarnished truth about their school.
There are two main ways to get face time with undergrads:
- Randomly approach students during your campus visits (note: most tour guides will feel compelled to put a positive spin things, so your “honest” conversations shouldn’t be with them).
- Work your connections (e.g., get coffee with that cousin of your friend’s who happens to go to your dream college when she’s next home on break).
