In addition to tuition, mandatory fees are a part of the cost of attendance at most colleges.
Many of these fees—e.g., “student activities,” “library services,” and “course registration”—are pretty straightforward. Others—e.g., the “campus spirit” fee at UC Irvine—are a little more esoteric.
According to U.S. News, you won’t be able to opt out of most of these fees, even if you do not take advantage of the services for which they pay.
Its proposed solution? Take advantage of as many “free” services as possible. Depending on your school, these might include the following:
- Acupuncture, counseling, medical tests, and vaccinations (covered by your “student health” fee).
- Computer repairs and anti-virus software (covered by your “technology” fee).
- On- and off-campus shuttle bus services (covered by your “transportation” fee).
