Some students have strict privacy settings on their social media accounts; others have special accounts just for communicating with friends.
However, despite such precautions, colleges have been finding an increasing amount of online "dirt" on applicants.
According to Katherine Price, a former admissions officer, it’s better to have a “positive online presence” than to try to hide stuff you don’t want colleges to see.
In this vein, U.S. News suggests that you think of your online profile as a “brand” and proactively build a positive one on social media sites such as Google+, Facebook, Twitter, LiveJournal, and Pinterest.
