Colleges typically address costs and financial aid one year at a time, which can make it difficult for students to anticipate the full cost of a degree.
In some cases, colleges “front load” their financial aid so that a student receives less the longer he or she attends the institution. However, even when a college keeps aid consistent, its rising costs can lead to unexpected increases in out-of-pocket expenditures and loans for the student.
Bucking convention, the University of Dayton plans to tell its prospective students the total cost needed to obtain a degree. Beginning this year, UD’s financial aid offers will specify expected costs for four years.
The Chronicle of Higher Education recently posted a sample of UD’s new aid-offer format. Click here to check out.
