Are you a super-smart student from a low-income family?
If so, did you know that students such as yourself often receive scholarships to cover the full cost of attendance at elite colleges across the U.S.?
A recent study found that many qualified low-income students do not even apply to the elite schools offering them this type of aid. This is particularly true of students living outside of large metropolitan areas.
Why is this the case? Some don’t think they have a chance to get in. Others don’t have anyone encouraging them to leave home (in fact, some have the opposite).
My advice: if you have the credentials, apply! You should aim to have one or two reaches—a.k.a., “dream schools”—on your college list (particularly if, after aid, these schools would be less expensive than a community college).
While an elite college education isn’t everything, research shows that it can be particularly beneficial for low-income students as it helps them to build the connections they will use in their professional lives.
