Recently, we have shared some stories touting the benefits of attending in-state colleges. These schools offer state residents terrific educational opportunities for a fraction of some of the private school prices.
However, finding your "best fit" school is not just about affordability. And these days, some of the top private schools - including those in the Ivy League - have exceptional financial aid packages that can keep costs down for potential students.
And these top colleges are eager to have students who are eligible for this financial aid to apply to their schools. Some are using technology to help clarify questions about cost that students may have before applying. For example, as mentioned in this piece on NBCNews.com, Wellesley College launched a program called My InTuition that helps students see an estimate of the type of financial aid package they could expect from the school. Other schools have similar calculators, and are more than willing to help students navigate the process of applying for financial aid.
Since cost is a major factor for many students and their families, make sure you do the research to see what kind of aid is available before crossing a school off of your list.
